Newtown Friends of Music brought its thirty-second season to an elegant close with a concert by the Quatuor Parisii at Edmond Town Hall on Sunday, April 11.
The quartet, whose members are Arnaud Vallin (first violin), Jean-Michel Berrette (second violin), Dominique Lobet (viola), and Jean-Philippe Martignoni (cello) presented a program of string quartets written in France at the end of the 19th Century.
The most recent concert sponsored by Newtown Friends of Music, which took place on Sunday, March 14, at Edmond Town Hall, was an occasion marked by discoveries, rarities, surprises, and a debut. In this performance, the violist Jennifer Stumm and the pianist Tom Poster (who was making his American performance debut) played a number of works written for, or transcribed for, viola and piano.
Newtown - Leaving their home in the Czech Republic to perform around the world is nothing new to members of the Talich String Quartet.
They’ve played together since the group was founded in Prague in 1964 and are coming to the end of their current tour. They gave a superb demonstration of why they are so highly regarded in a recital Sunday for Newtown Friends of Music.
Chamber music presented by Newtown Friends of Music rarely delivers the visceral satisfaction provided by Trio Solisti. In its dazzling recital at Edmond Town Hall last Sunday, Trio Solisti got the audience to sit up and pay attention, perking up everyone's ears with its bold interpretations of familiar classics and introducing some refreshing new material.
